_____ The most impressive designs are fine examples of the interpretative skill, graphic invention, and compressed imaginative intensity that a good cover requires. “He loved to find ideas,” says Bernard de Fallois, a former director of Livre de poche, in Faucheux’s monograph. “His taste was both classical and full of fantasy. The research of reference material occupied a large place in his graphic constructions.” Before Faucheux took up the task, Livre de poche titles tended to have conventional painted covers by a usually unattributed artist. These earlier figurative illustrations are frequently charming, often kitsch, and now look very dated. For all the books, the smaller “poche” size (110 x 165 mm) is undoubtedly part of their appeal. _____

_____ My works explore everyday objects with the use of photography and collage elements, which are turned into scarp contoured, sculptural expressions. The precise and clean cut composition of colour and shape suggests, in a poetic, consistent language, that the fragmentation of contemporary, nomadic, globalised life does not drain it of meaning. The works show the process of navigating through the rapid flow of visual impressions that the contemporary consumer is constantly confronted with. _____

_____ This body of work concentrates on “new towns”, in particular Harlow and Stevenage, built for the purpose of re-housing exiles from London in the 1950s.

New towns less sharply define iconic images of Britain but are still culturally and historically important. Being drawn to the uniform, low-tech approach to design that characterises the modernist faith in progress, has led to echoing specific, repetitive architectural motifs highlighting the spirit and aesthetic of that era. _____

Don'ts

collage, visual poetry "Do's" and "Don'ts" by Bern Porter from U B U W E B

_____ Bern Porter (1911–2004) contributed to some of the most important scientific and artistic innovations of the twentieth century. He worked on the development of the cathode-ray tube (for television), the atomic bomb (with the Manhattan Project), and NASA’s Saturn V Rocket. When the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, in 1945, Porter walked away from his position with the Manhattan Project and, disappointed with his work as a physicist, turned his attention to artistic pursuits. In the aftermath of World War II, a flood of visual information spread across the United States. Advertisements in newspapers and magazines and on billboards and television promised an easier and happier life through the purchasing of products. For his collages, which he dubbed “Founds,” Porter gathered the waste of this new culture—advertisements, junk mail, instruction booklets, scientific documents, and other material—and turned it into art. In addition to his books of Founds, Porter authored treatises on the unification of science and art (what he called “Sciart”) and books of experimental poetry. He published work by major figures in art and literature, such as Henry Miller, Kenneth Patchen, and Dick Higgins. Also, as the self-proclaimed inventor of mail art, Porter was an active participant in a vast international network of artists who shared their work with each other through the post. _____

The Virtue of the Coffee Drink

virtueoftheCoffeedrink130811mj.jpg
A handbill published in 1652 to promote the launch of Pasqua Rosée’s coffeehouse

_____ until the mid-seventeenth century, most people in England were either slightly — or very — drunk all of the time. Drink London’s fetid river water at your own peril; most people wisely favoured watered-down ale or beer (“small beer”). The arrival of coffee, then, triggered a dawn of sobriety that laid the foundations for truly spectacular economic growth in the decades that followed as people thought clearly for the first time. _____

A collage from VOU magazine, November 1968 © Sumiko Hashimoto, Collection of John Solt

_____ That tendency shows up in many of Kitasono’s pieces in the show, including his video works from the ’60s, his later minimalist book jacket designs and his influential editorial work with VOU, a monthly poetry journal that was published from 1935 until Kitasono’s death in 1978, with a five-year intermission for Wold War II. “The underpinning of the VOU club was that they wanted all types of art in there, as long as it had poesy,” Goodall said, “so he invited people to do photographs, pieces of music, plays, as well as poems.” _____
